ADRC History

1972 - Agency Incorporates - Combined Hospitals Alcoholism Program

CHAP was established to medically treat people suffering from alcoholism as an alternative to jail.

1973 - Detoxification Center - Opened October 2, 1973


The first location for the Detoxification Center was 500 Vine St, Hartford.

1983 - Name Changes to Alcoholism Detoxification & Rehabilitation Center.

1985 - Clayton House opens


Clayton House, a residential halfway house in Glastonbury, is the first ADRC program outside of Detoxification.

1989 - Alternate Living Center opens [known as ALC]


ALC establishes ADRC's third physical location, at 56 Coventry Street, Hartford

1991 - Name Changes to Alcohol & Drug Recovery Centers, Inc.

1993 - Coventry House opens

1994 - Outpatient Counseling Center opens

1997 - ADRC becomes a Saint Francis Care Affiliate

1998 - SATEP begins [Substance Abuse Treatment Enhancement Project]

     - Transportation - August, 1998
     - ACCESS Line - August, 1998
     - Intensive Program - February, 1999
     - Intermediate Program - February, 1999
     - Women's ALC - October, 1999

1999 - Detoxification Center - Moved to the former Mount Sinai Hospital building at 500 Blue Hills Avenue, on Jan. 21, 1999

2000 - Recovery House opens [20 beds]

2000 - Latino Youth Project - Closed June 30, 2004 [grant ends]

2001 - Latino Outpatient Counseling opens

2003 - Qualifacts Computerized Client Information System - launched May 12, 2003

2005 - Access To Recovery starts - ADRC Regional Lead Agency and first to start in the state

2006 - Bond Commission awards a $252,618 grant for roof and windows at Recovery House. Completed in December, 2006.

2006 - October - Hartford Foundation for Public Giving award of $345,000 for expansion of main Outpatient Counseling Center

2006 - Renewal of ten [10] year lease at 16 Coventry Street [with City of Hartford]

2007 - Recovery House II opens [10 beds]

2008 - Complete renovation & expansion of the Outpatient Counseling Center

2008 - Selected as principal contractor for the Recovery-Oriented Vocational Services grant

2008 - Initiate buprenorphine-based detoxification treatment protocol [late June]

2010 - Selected by DMHAS as one of two agencies in the state to participate in the Trauma Informed - Gender Responsive [TiGr] initiative.

2011 - Selected to launch the Jail Diversion Substance Abuse project in the Hartford Region

(ADRC) is a private non-profit corporation located in Hartford, Connecticut, providing high quality substance abuse treatment and recovery-supportive services. We operate a number of facilities, offering a wide range of services to help our clients achieve and maintain a life free of the destructive effects of chemical dependency.
