    What is the Alternate Living Center?
  • The Alternate Living Center (ALC) is a long term, recovery oriented housing program.
    Who is ALC for?
  • Men at least 21 years old.
  • Men with a long history of drug/alcohol use.
  • ALC is supportive of those on methadone maintenance.
  • Men who have been free from drugs of abuse and/or alcohol for at least 30 days
  • Men with ability to care for themselves.
    What is required of residents?
  • Have and keep a job (minimum of 32 hours per week).
  • Pay weekly rent.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled outpatient treatment.
  • Attend required 12-step meetings.
  • Submit random urine and breathalyzer screens.
  • If you have a mental health or medical problem - take any prescribed medications and be stable.
    Prior Treatment Requirements
  • A hard time staying sober despite prior treatment in short term programs.
  • Usually residents have completed at least one intensive (28 day) program within the past 6 months and one intermediate (90 day) program within the past year.
    What does ALC provide?
  • A recovery-based, safe, supportive, structured living environment.
  • AA/NA meetings.
  • Dinner each day.
  • Case managers who help with setting up outpatient treatment or psychiatric appointments.
  • Support to help residents find jobs and continue education.
  • Fully furnished rooms, an exercise room and a TV lounge.
  • A partially client run governance structure.
    What can a resident gain while in ALC?
  • A more stable and sustainable personal recovery.
  • Ability to live independently.
  • Enhanced Life Skills: such as impulse control, money management and anger management skills
  • Strong sobriety plan, including relapse prevention skills.
  • A recovery network with a sponsor and home group.
  • Self Care Skills, such as medical and dental care.
  • Ability to get and keep a job.
    How do I get into ALC?
  • Call the program at 860-714-3702 with questions and to schedule an interview
  • Fax referral paperwork to 860-714-8971 - paperwork should have a current physical, PPD, a description of potential resident's history and a release of information from your current or most recent treatment program (this helps to discuss progress made there).
