The Clayton House is a six-month maximum duration, intermediate-residential, substance abuse treatment facility. It serves 15 adult men and women primarily from the central Connecticut region. The majority of applicants to the Clayton House program are State Administered General Assistance (SAGA) recipients. Residents may be dually-diagnosed provided the psychiatric component of their condition does not prevent them from safely participating in the therapeutic program or hold employment.

The program requires residents to obtain full-time employment during the daytime while participating in an evening therapeutic program. The evening program consists of Relapse Prevention Group, Group Therapy, Education Group, Men's and Women's Group Therapy, Family Therapy, Loss and Grief, Spirituality Group, individual counseling sessions, and twelve-step meetings, as well as weekly after-care group session for alumni. All groups run for average duration of one and a half hours. Individual sessions are scheduled on a weekly basis. These sessions are typically one hour.

A system is employed which positively reinforces recovery attitudes and behaviors. As residents demonstrate changes toward healthy choices and lifestyle, they receive increases in weekend pass time and independence from the weekday evening program to attend twelve-step meetings, which they select for themselves.

Admission Criteria for the Clayton House are 1) motivation and 2) be able and willing to work full-time or be enrolled in an academic/vocational training program. A person who is unwilling or unable to hold employment is referred to alternate programs as are those who feel the structure of a therapeutic milieu would be too restrictive for their needs, and 3) adults 18 years and older.

Methods of Access/Source of Referrals:
Clients may self refer directly to the Clayton House program by calling. A brief history is taken of their recent circumstances and an application form is faxed, mailed, or emailed to them which includes instructions for other documentation necessary to complete the "application package" (e.g., psychosocial, medical history, PPD results). Clients are assisted in obtaining supporting documentation from any previous providers. After receiving the completed application package, a telephone interview is scheduled and completed as soon as possible.

Length of Stay:
All clients admitted to the Clayton House may stay in the program for any amount of time up to 6 months as deemed appropriate according to the client's individual needs.

Exclusionary Criteria: The following are psychosocial contraindications for admission to the Clayton House program. Where any one of these conditions is present, the request for admission may be declined:

1) Serious psychiatric disorder including psychosis, character disorder and severe clinical depression which would endanger the client and/or other clients in the program. Serious suicide and/or homicidal threat directed toward self or others.

2) If a significant other is already in treatment or if the client is a relative of a current ADRC Clayton House employee.

3) Total refusal from client to participate actively in the treatment program events or refusal to abide by program rules and regulations.

The goal of the Clayton House is to support the client's transition from an intensive substance abuse treatment setting back to independent living by providing the person with a safe, substance-free environment in which to address therapeutic issues and obtain full-time employment. A mandatory savings plan facilitates the saving and management of job wages.
