The goals of the program are to provide specialized treatment to men and women age 60 and above. Residential detoxification for the elderly population accommodates the district medical needs of this population including a more frequent nursing assessment during the withdrawal period. This period is often longer than for the younger client and requires adjusting of the frequency and dosage of withdrawal medication. Vital signs are required more frequently due to histories of cardiac disease. Partial-to-complete nursing care is often needed due to the withdrawal and/or debilitated state of the elderly. Nutritional and dietary needs differ with this population; special diets (soft, ADA, bland, etc.) and nutritional supplements are therefore offered to the client.

Program exceptions are allowed for this population of clients, as they require more time at rest and so are excused from groups and self-help meetings until they are stronger. They also require more time in getting to meals, as well as more time in the actual eating of the meals.

Groups are offered to this population as they have little tolerance for the younger, more aggressive, clients and have their own issues to discuss. Therefore, age-specific groups will continue in the Detoxification Center and Alternate Living Center. Assessments to determine referral appropriateness to the ALC for elderly persons will be done by the Detoxification counseling staff and Senior Outreach Coordinator. The ALC will continue with its elderly-specific intensive care management for this population. Expansion of services will include ten (10) designated elderly beds. These groups run for approximately 45 minutes three times a week. Admission to this service is the same as for all ADRC programs as well as access and referrals.
